Ormskirk is a small market town in England, with a population of approximately 23,500 (2005 est.). It is situated on the Lancashire plain, 13 miles north of Liverpool and 18 miles south of Preston. It is the base for West Lancashire District Council and is also home to Edge Hill University.
According to legend, Ormskirk was founded when Vikings, led by Orme, settled in the area. It is believed that Orme was, or later became, a Christian as he built a church, giving the town its name: Orme's Kirk.
